Proposed Schedule
Our City Championship tournament is fast approaching, and it is time
to hunker down and start some serious planning:
Case Previews: Before I get
to the logistics of the event itself, please remember that case
previews are due to me by today,
February 27th. As determined at the last coaches meeting, the
runnable case list will be re-developed for city champs, and each
school will be allowed to preview ONE case in each division (Varsity
and JV) for the championship tournament. I am attaching the form
once again. Note-- ONLY
cases previewed now will be runnable, along with the core files. If
you have previewed a case previously in the season, you MUST
re-preview it in order to be eligible to run it. Please email me
immediately if you have any questions regarding this policy.
Tournament Location: The
location for City Champs (March 30th and 31st) will be Morgan Park
High School, at 1744 W. Pryor, in Chicago.
Tournament Schedule: Given
that the tournament will be hosted by a city high school—and thus we
must adhere to their school's class schedule—the tournament timing
is going to require some tweaking. We originally planned to break to
octa-finals at city champs, and given the size of the tournament, I
would still like to accommodate this schedule. Breaking to octa's
means that twice as many students will have the opportunity to
participate in elim rounds, and receive awards at the City
Championship tournament-- an experience and opportunity I think we
can all appreciate.
In order to accommodate an extra break round on Saturday, we would
have to run three prelim rounds on Friday night. I am attaching to
this email a proposed schedule for the tournament, which I think is
ambitious and completely doable. If we continue our record of
tournament efficiency, the City Champs will run like clockwork and
we won't even notice the extra round.
The main difference in the proposed schedule is that rounds would
begin ONE hour EARLIER (at 4:00 PM, rather than 5:00 PM), dinner
would be at 7:30pm, and the tournament would end one hour later than
usual (at 9:30pm) on Friday. I am confident that this schedule is
feasible, and the best option for the tournament. Please look over
the schedule and let me know if you have any questions, comments or
objections, by Thursday, March 1st.
Eligibility: The final (and
most up to date) list of city champs qualified debaters is attached.
Please review the list and send any omissions and or misspellings my
way by Thursday, March 1st. No changes will be made to the list
after this date.
Registration: Given the
outstanding success of so many students this season, we have 115
teams qualified to compete at city champs. This means that if every
school sent every qualified team, plus their one allowed at-large
team, we would have 152 teams competing! Being that we are limited
in classroom space, I need registration numbers as early as
possible, so that we can plan accordingly. Please submit your
registration to me using the attached form via email, no later than
Tuesday, March 20th. NO REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED PAST THE
DEADLINE.
Also, when registering, please remember to indicate which team you
are entering with your at-large bid. This will make the registration
process a lot easier and more efficient on our end. If you have any
questions about registration or eligibility, please don't hesitate
to get in touch.

One special addendum: The second place speaker in the Junior Varsity
division was misannounced at the assembly. The real winner was
Muriel Dorsey from Prosser (and not her partner, as was announced).

Policies that the Coaches voted to ratify and adopt at the January
21st Coaches' Seminar. All of the Guidelines and Policies are
included in the attached CDL G & P.
The 2007 Chicago Debate Championship will have a Runnable Case List
developed newly for it. Each school can preview one Case per
Division, using the attached form (same as the standard CDL form,
except that it does not include 1AC cites). The deadline is
February 27th. Prior to this, the RCC schools are obligated to
preview all of the Cases that they have run this year, in both
Divisions, that are still "live" -- i.e., potential Cases that they
might preview officially on February 27th. The deadline for this
RCC pre-previewing is February 20th.

(11/17) Core Files in the News
With the
Democrats increasing their power in the federal government, there
has been a lot of discussion recently about possible troop
withdrawals in Iraq. This recent New York Times article is
particularly good:

(11/9) This week's
Newsweek has a short article on urban debate and the new "hip-hop"
style, in which the NAUDL and yours truly makes an appearance --
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15560983/site/newsweek/
And amidst the media swirl around the Joe Miller book Cross-X there
was this public radio interview from Kansas City which I think that
you might find very enjoyable to listen to, particularly (but not
exclusively) if you're a new Coach trying to get a handle on what an
Urban Debate League is all about, what it's objectives are, how it
is supposed to "sound" like (not the debates, but the testimony of
coach and student -- though this coach and student are, it's true,
at the high end of dedication . . .) --

(10/31) Has everyone heard the Talk of the Nation segment today
on NPR that featured Joe Miller and Marcus Leach discussing Academic

City Central Debate Team? What a thrill! Here's the link --

I haven't read more than a few chapters yet of Joe Miller's
"Cross-X," about KC Central's successes and sociological conquests
on the National
Circuit of Deabte in 2002/03, but I've liked what I've read! Here's

and is now the person in charge of all Advanced Placement courses for
CPS. This means that she'll no longer be working directly with the CDL

(9/20) For those who weren't at the first Coaches' Seminar of this
season, last month, Dick Sullivan's responsibilities as President of
the National Association for Urban Debate League, in addition to some
other personal considerations, have required that he step down from
his role as Judge Coordinator (and all-around Problem Solver) for the
Chicago Debate League. We'll all miss him in that (many-varied)
role, to be sure, though he'll be at Tournaments and around, even
without official responsibilities. Regarding information flow, please
send all questions and information you have regarding judges and
judging to Brittney Blair britblair1@yahoo.com or 773-220-2302 -- and all questions and
information you have regarding coaches and coaching or teaching to me.

(5/8) Our Maverick policy has changed (again). Here is the new
one, as determined at today's Coaches Seminar.
3.5 Maverick Teams
Single-person teams in policy debate are called “Maverick” teams;
policy debate is designed for two-person teams. Schools cannot
register more than one Maverick team per Division prior to 24 hours
before the beginning of a tournament. Debaters who have debated
Maverick in six or more rounds during the season are not eligible to
debate in the Elimination Rounds. Maverick teams are disallowed at the
City Championship.
(4/23) Local NPR affiliate WBEZ's Chicago Matters program had a piece
on the CDL earlier this week? that told a very positive story about
the CDL by focusing on the Kelly debaters and Kelly's Head Coach Scott
Dodsworth. They did an absolutely wonderful job with the attention!

Who We Are...
The Chicago Debate League (CDL) serves to advance the Mission of the
Chicago Public Schools (CPS): to be the premier urban school district
by providing high quality instruction, outstanding academic programs,
and development supports to prepare its students for tomorrow's
challenges. The CDL is one of the nation's oldest, largest, and very
best Urban Debate Leagues. It instructs student participants in
reading, speaking, writing, and listening -- all of the language arts.
With a rigorous critical thinking component, it is an outstanding and
challenging academic program. In university campus classrooms and on
electronic research databases, CPS debaters are preparing for their
future success. Debate empowers all participating students, and
thereby helps create school-wide norms and expectations of academic
excellence. To learn more please visit the
"About the CDL" page by

more of the following national service programs: AmeriCorps, Citizen
Corps, Senior Corps, Peace Corps, Learn and Serve America, Armed
Forces.
